Chapter 13

Kaylee was a bit confused as she walked with Captain Baston down to the motor pool. She sensed she had done something wrong, but didn't know quite what.

“Did you know Brian before you were attacked?”, asked captain Baston.

“No, I met him at the hospital.”, she thought for a second, then asked, “Why are you asking?”

“Well it is a little odd for you to ask the detective investigating your case to come out with you for a bite to eat is all.”

“Is it, well, against the rules or something?”, asked Kaylee, realizing what she might have done now, she didn't want to get Brian in trouble if she could help it.

“Rules? Hardly, not to go eat with them anyway.”

“Oh well we found out we have physical therapy at the same place a couple times a week and he went with me to see Stacey's funeral, I didn't think lunch would be that big of deal.”

“Are you interested in my Detective?”

Kaylee had to try and think about the right way to answer the question, her hesitation was enough for Captain Jane Baston, who laughed and said, “Your face says it all! Look Kaylee, I wouldn't mind, not really, but not while he is investigating your case, it is just not professional. Brian needs to have clear head about this case and treat it like any other. If you two have discovered you are soul mates you or he needs to let me know. I will try and find someone else to investigate this so you can have your romance. Or can you keep your hands off of him until he is finished?”

Embarrassed Kaylee answered, “I...guess I could keep my hands off of him.” the memory of unzipping his pants and sliding her hands down to cup his penis as he was talking on his cell phone came unbidden to her mind, causing her to flush even more intensely. Kaylee was convinced their needs were mutual, no one was getting hurt. Still she did not want to get Brian in trouble with his boss. More forcefully she said, “Yes, I can keep my hands off of him.”

“Good, keep your lips off of him too. At least until we solve or shelve this case okay?”

Kaylee nodded. They were in the main lobby when she heard a familiar older woman's voice call out, “Hi Kaylee! They were looking for someone to give a witness a ride home and I have some time, so I am it!”, it was Florence, who had come with Walt down to Indianola to retrieve the letter from Stacey's tombstone. She nodded to the captain who nodded back then turned and left, “So...what did I interrupt? Something good I hope, you do seem to be a bit red.”

“Nothing, just, nothing.”, Kaylee answered.

“Ah, we need privacy, huh? Well, we'll be in a car together soon you can tell me all about it then.”

“No, I...”

Holding up one hand Flo admonished, “No, wait for the car ride. Lets go see what we have to drive you home in, hopefully it will have heat.”

They were lucky enough to grab a car that was just returned and still warm to drive home in. As soon as they cleared out of the station's garage Flo started in, “Okay what happened? Get balled out by the captain for not identifying the right guy?”

“No, it was about Brian.”, as soon as she said it Kaylee knew she should have kept her mouth shut.

Flo got a puzzled look on her face, “Brian? Why would it be about Brian...wait a minute you mean about YOU and Brian, don't you?”

“Uh...”

Laughing Flo jokingly said, “That old dog, picking up on an injured victim while she was vulnerable!”

“No it wasn't like that, it...”

“Wasn't like that? So you admit there is something going on?”

“Well, I...I don't want to get Brian in trouble.”, Kaylee said lamely.

“Trouble for what? Satisfying your womanly needs? I admit it is a little odd for him to make a play for you, or for well, anyone. I thought for the longest time he was gay. Walt knew him longer than I did and filled me in on his history.”

“What history?”

“Not for me to tell hon. Well okay you twisted my arm, his wife got killed early on, they never found her body and he was still carrying a torch for her. A shame too. I know it sounds callous, but she is gone, either dead or doesn't want to find him. He needed to move on, you came around during one of his soul searching periods. He had been moping about a month ago, around Christmas, him and Walt are pretty good friends, close, not quite brothers, but close. So you must be the reason for Brian not wearing his wedding band anymore.”

“I think so, but the captain said...”

“To stay away from him, right?”, Flo waved her hand as if brushing away an annoying fly, “Yeah she says a lot, makes sense too, maybe for now. Just don't throw anything you have with Brian in her face and you will be okay. I mean you know Walt and I are an item right?”

Surprised Kaylee blurted out, “No!”, Flo was probably forty five and Walt had to be fifteen years her senior.

“Yeah, see? My point exactly. What goes on in the lab behind locked doors is not thrown in everyone's face so they pretend to ignore it and we pretend nothing is going on. Just keep your head down and you two will be okay. That is good too, there have been many times when Brian was over with Walt were I would tell myself, 'Flo that man needs to get laid'.”, Flo paused a minute seeing how Kaylee would react at such informal familiarity.

“That hasn't happened, its not like that.”, then Kaylee couldn't help but add with an impish smile, “Yet.”

Flo laughed pretty hard, seeing potential for the four of them getting together, This girl might work out. She though to herself.

A few minutes went by then Kaylee said, “In the lab?”

Flo shrugged, “I don't know what you are talking about.”

“Aren't there dead people in the lab?”

“Oh no, never! That would be disgusting, there are only parts of dead people in the lab.”

“Ewwwwww!”, Kaylee laughed, “That is so gross!”
